As of this morning the Edmonton Oilers sit first place in the Pacific division with a record of 11-8-1 good for 23 points! Sure the team had a bit of a rough go on the road on November but that was to be expected. It sure beats the past few November’s when I already knew who the top three predicted picks were in the next June’s N.H.L. entry draft. Not only did I know but I had opinions on who they should draft and why! Let’s look back.
On November 30th, 2015 the Oilers season was over as they had a record on 8-15-2. At this point Curtis and I were already looking at articles on Austin Matthews, Patrick Laine, Jesse Puljujarvi and even Matthew Tkachuk. We knew that there was a consensus top three and that the Oilers would be lucky to get any of them. We knew Tkachuk would be a good fit because the Oilers were soft and could use his gritty style of play.
On November 30th, 2014 the Oilers season was yet again over as they had a record of 6-14-4. Again Curtis and I knew the McJesus was the DREAM draft pick and Jack Eichel would be a very good consolation prize. I had arguments with Curtis over Mitch Marner because he was highly skilled but small so wouldn’t be a fit here in Edmonton. We had discussed that maybe Noah Hanifin was the guy because the team desperately needed defencemen. We always hoped it would be McDavid but we heavily debated the next top players.
On November 30th, 2013 the Oilers season was far gone and their record was 8-17-2. Curtis and I desperately hoped the team could somehow get Aaron Ekblad. We discussed that he was exactly what the team needed. We chatted about Sam Reinhart and his lack of size but high skill level. We knew all about his blood lines and the type of player he was. Curtis was a big fan of Michael Dal Colle because he was a power forward and just what the team needed. Yet again we knew all about the top players in the upcoming draft and it wasn’t even Decemeber.
Well guess what Oilers fans? I just got off the phone with Curtis and chatted about the exact topic. I had to be reminded by Curtis who the number one prospect was in the upcoming draft. I couldn’t even remember Nolan Patrick’s name! and better yet…neither of us have any idea who is currently ranked second, third or fourth!!! I would like to thank the The Edmonton Oilers for finally not being an awful hockey team as I would much rather discuss the possibility of the playoffs over whether the team takes the best player available or the best “fit” in the upcoming draft. I am so happy that I have no clue who those players ranked 2-30 in the 2017 N.H.L. draft. I can’t wait for the Oilers to draft some kid I’ve never heard of with the 23rd overall pick only to send him back to junior. I can’t wait!!!
Keep the Faith!!!
